PITTSBURGH – Adding to a growing list of international awards and recognition, Pittsburgh International Airport has been named the 2017 CAPA Centre for Aviation Regional Airport of the Year.
The honor is given to the regional airport that has been the biggest standout strategically, has established itself as a leader and done the most to advance the progress of the aviation industry. Candidates are selected by CAPA’s global team of analysts for performance and a small panel of independent industry experts.
Established in 1990, CAPA convenes aviation and travel summits around the world, bringing together the leaders and decision-makers in global commercial aviation. These events are regarded as benchmarks in the industry for their thought leadership content and networking opportunities.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by CAPA, a respected industry resource, as this year’s Regional Airport of the Year,” Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said. “This award is a reflection of the great progress Pittsburgh International has made in a short time, and that progress is a result of the hard-work and dedication of our team. Moving forward, we strive to continue the success and growth we have been experiencing.”
In nominating Pittsburgh International as its Regional Airport of the Year, CAPA recognized the airport for its ability to work in conjunction with the city of Pittsburgh during its ongoing economic resurgence. The organization noted the airport’s continuous growth, which includes an 80 percent increase in nonstop service, rising passenger traffic over the past three years as well as plans for a $1.1 billion terminal modernization.
“Pittsburgh International Airport is a copybook definition of how an airport can reinvent itself after the loss of many services of a key hub carrier –due to circumstances outside of its control – by refocusing on point-to-point demand,” CAPA stated.
