Listen carefully. This artwork is a sound space located within the public escalators, touching every level of the terminal. It leverages sounds of the region and real-time data to connect the city, the region and the community through a shared art experience rooted in site. This welcoming gesture grounds people within the transitional, fluid airport space and reminds them where they are.
A Call for Sounds asked the public to identify the sounds that make Pittsburgh home. This outreach resulted in a library of sounds composed of field recordings and submissions from individuals and institutions. Realtime datasets that reflect the ongoing rhythms of the region bring a real-world context. Custom algorithms inspire the composition’s narrative structure to create a new way of storytelling.
