PITTSBURGH – New nonstop options for all types of travelers – business, leisure, domestic and international – on numerous airlines, are creating increases in passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport not seen in a decade.
New flights to Florida and other markets on Spirit and Allegiant, expanded service on JetBlue to Boston, as well as international service to Paris, Frankfurt and Reykjavik on Delta, Condor and WOW respectively led to the airport’s busiest June since 2007 and 14 straight months of growth.
Total passengers were up 6.6 percent for the month, and up 6 percent year-to-date. In June, 832,781 people traveled through the airport compared to 780,863 last year. Available seats increased more than 7 percent and scheduled flights increased more than 10 percent.
New year-round service to Reykjavik, Iceland with connections to Europe on WOW air launched June 16. One week later, German carrier Condor began twice weekly service to Frankfurt on 259 seat wide-body aircraft. Delta’s nonstop service to Paris began operating on May 25.
“These numbers indicate good, healthy growth in traffic that is driven by our new nonstop service to a number of destinations,” Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said. “We’re encouraged by these numbers and anticipate more growth as we move forward.”
This coming July is expected to also be busy for the airport with over 1 million arriving and departing seats operating from the airport. The last time Pittsburgh International Airport operated more than 1 million seats from the airport was in November 2008.
Cassotis also noted that following a recent announcement by Delta to add twice daily nonstop service to Boston beginning October 1, Jet Blue will add a sixth daily nonstop flight to Boston starting October 29. Additionally, following OneJet’s announcement of new service to Nashville, Southwest will add a second daily Nashville flight in October.
More than 4.1 million people have traveled through the airport thus far in 2017. Through June 2016, 3.9 million people had traveled.
