PITTSBURGH – In partnership with Fallingwater, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh International Airport has installed two new art and cultural exhibits to enhance travelers’ experience and showcase regional assets.
A unique scale model and innovative 3-D video of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpiece Fallingwater has been installed in Baggage Claim across from the VisitPITTSBURGH kiosk. The video, made by Emmy Award winning director Kenneth Love, features Rembrandt 3-D technology that presents the viewer with “true to life” image realism without the need for special eyewear. The video provides a short history of Fallingwater’s commission, as well as a biography of the Kaufmann family and Wright.
When the video that accompanies the exhibit was unveiled in 2015, Love told NPR that the new technology brings the house's best features to life. “It gives you this whole sense of scale and dimension,” he said.
The 1” = 7.25’ or 1:87 scale model, created by Wiley White, Principal of Architectural Models in Norman, Okla., is one of only two such models of Fallingwater. The other is displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Lynda Waggoner, director of Fallingwater and vice president of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, said she hopes the display encourages visitors to Pittsburgh and residents in the area to take the 90-minute drive to see one of the most important buildings of 20 th century architecture. “The 3-D video and model will give an engaging introduction to Fallingwater, from its history to what the house and surrounding grounds look like. Fallingwater is truly a work of art that inspires people from all across the world.”
The Fallingwater installation was completed by airport laborers, electricians and carpenters.
At the south end of the third Floor Ticketing Level, a survey of eight works that explore the intersection of traditional sculpture and new digital media by sculptor Michael Walsh has been installed just past the Allegiant and Southern Airways Express ticket counters.
Michael Walsh was born in Pittsburgh and has lived and worked throughout North America. Walsh has exhibited the sculptures in this exhibition throughout North America and Europe, including the Carnegie Museum of Art, the National Archaeological Museum in Florence, Italy, Burning Man in Black Rock City, Nev., and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.
The exhibit was curated by the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, the oldest continuously-exhibiting visual arts organization in the country, and will be on display through June.
