PITTSBURGH – To support the Pittsburgh region’s growing demand for direct access to Silicon Valley, United Airlines has added a second daily seasonal nonstop flight between Pittsburgh and San Francisco for summer 2018.

The second daily flight will operate from June 7 through Aug. 20 with a morning departure from Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) and afternoon arrival at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). This flight will operate as an overnight flight on return. Tickets are now available for purchase.

Also, beginning April 9, United will start operating its long-running daily nonstop flight to San Francisco at a new time. The new departure time from PIT will be 5:30 p.m. with an 8 p.m. arrival at SFO. The departure time from SFO will be 8:40 a.m. with a 4:35 p.m. arrival at PIT. With the second seasonal flight and enhanced flight times, passengers will have multiple nonstop options to the San Francisco Bay Area and will experience additional choices for connections through SFO to markets in the Asia-Pacific and Hawaii.

“Our technology industry in this region has been asking for expanded service to San Francisco and we’re pleased United is growing its service and providing additional West Coast ties to support that industry,” Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said. “This is just one more example of our region’s growing economy. This additional service by United will help our region’s expanding technology industry and allow those businesses to thrive, while also facilitating additional opportunities for tourism.”

Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said new and expanded service to the West Coast continues to be a high priority in order to drive innovation and regional growth.

“We have been aware of the business community’s need for increased Bay Area service for several years. I’d like to thank United for taking these steps to improve access between these great cities and we look forward to eventually expanding the service to two daily round trips year-round,” Cassotis said.

Audrey Russo, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Technology Council, which represents more than 1,300 members of Pittsburgh’s growing tech sector from AI and Robotics to Life Sciences and Application developers, said additional service and better times are key to business.

“With the presence of Google, Apple, Facebook, Uber and others here in Pittsburgh, we have a multitude of companies of all sizes and growth stages that depend on a nonstop link to Silicon Valley to conduct business, or travel for trade shows and conferences,” Russo said. “The epicenter of capital investment for tech, continues to rest in Silicon Valley. These flights, along with more convenient departure and arrival times, offer better opportunities for these key strategic relationships.”
