CADENCE: a fashion collection

September 30, 2024 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

As part of the PIT Art in the Airport program, Pittsburgh International Airport will present "Cadence," a fashion collection infused with storytelling and emotion, on Monday, September 30, at 3 p.m. at the Landside Terminal Ticketing Level (Level 3). The designs will then be displayed on the Landside Transit Level through March 2025.

Inspired by the definition of "cadence" as a sequence of notes or chords comprising the close of a musical phrase, this collection symbolizes the end of a chapter for Ms. Burton as she bids farewell to her twenties and paves the way for new beginnings in her thirties. In a collaborative effort, Cat Burton and Cathy Trostle-Olivar have delved into the depths of their career journeys to distill the prominent emotions that have defined their paths.

Each piece in the "Cadence" collection serves as a canvas for these emotions, intricately woven into the fabric and design. From the bittersweet nostalgia of farewells to the exhilarating anticipation of new horizons, every garment encapsulates a unique emotion, inviting wearers to connect with the stories woven into each thread. "Cadence" is not just a fashion collection - it is a testament to the transformative power of embracing change, growth, and the uncharted paths that lie ahead.

"Cadence" is the creation of Cat Burton. Ms. Burton is a curator and producer at the confluence of media, fashion, and art-focused experiences. She currently serves as the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh's Creative Producer, where her role is to build new creative professional and artistic networks within the local, national, and international arts community and develop a strategic vision for multi-media, multi-disciplinary creative content. Additionally, Ms. Burton serves on the arts advisory committee for Pittsburgh International Airport.

The designer is Cathy Trostle-Olivar, a first-generation Latina-American fashion designer based in Pittsburgh. With a focus on sustainability, Mrs. Trostle-Olivar's designs aim to promote and advocate for slow fashion. Using materials like bamboo knit, deadstock fabric, and secondhand fabric or garments to up-cycle, she creates pieces that are an alternative to fast fashion. Mrs. Trostle-Olivar is inspired by nature and exploration and has an affinity for flowers. Her work ranges from her everyday clothing line, Earth is Groovy, to The Sun God installation at the Phipps Conservatory's 2023 Summer Flower Show inspired by Billy Porter.
